Stone tells story older than time…
Most of the stone naturally occurring in Finland is granite. Granite is an intrusive rock, produced at an enormous pressure and heat some 1,700 million years ago. According to some accounts, this process was completed not only by gravity and centrifugal forces, but also the mutual attractions of celestial bodies.
IN FINLAND, EVEN THE NATURE BUILDS ON FIRM GRANITE
The territory of Finland rests on a firm bedrock of granite. Despite these enormous natural resources, stone working is a relatively young industry. This is explained by the tremendous hardness of the Finnish granite. Quarrying only started in the course of this millennium, and it took centuries before the means were there to put a finishing touch on granite.
The Finns always held granite in great respect. This could be why its extraction and processing always are associated with particularly well organized environmental protection. Quarried stone is a pure, natural product, a material fully lending itself to recycling. No chemicals are used in its extraction and finishing. The quarrying only represents a surface scratch in a granite layer hundreds of meters deep. In Finland, there is a statutory obligation to restore the beauty of nature by landscaping once quarrying is finished.
In constructions, stone also is a material that is friendly to human beings. As a pure natural product, it neither radiates, emits nor evaporates anything that could be alien or harmful to humans.
INTERNATIONAL FINNISH STONE
Considering her size, Finland is an important quarrying country. The unusual characteristics of soapstone, the durability of granite and its ability to withstand air pollution, as well as the wide choice of colours in granites especially during the last couple of decades have all contributed in our success. The Finnish stone has found favor with designers of public and commercial buildings everywhere in the world.
If what you are looking for is beauty, you will be fascinated by stone.
If you insist on beauty that will last forever, you will end up with granite.
